Lueck and Wilson (2010)

Use: Acculturation, assimilation

Aim: to investigate the variables that may predict acculturative stress in a nationally representative sample of Asian immigrants and Asian Americans.

Procedure:

  • 2095 Asian Americans, 1271 first generation immigrants 18 and older when they came to USA

  • Rest are born in the US first generation immigrate parents.

  • Semi-structured interviews, interviewer had cultural and linguistic background similar to those sample population.

  • Over internet or face-to-face.

  • In 1433 of the 2095 interviews, participants found to have acculturative stress according to their score.

Result/conclusion:

  • 70% of the sample experienced acculturative stress

  • Bilingual preference leads to lower acculturative stress.

  • Although bilingualism is a predictor of low acculturative stress, preference for speaking English only is a predictor of high acculturative stress. *Assimilation*

  • Negative treatment leads to acculturative stress.

  • Sharing similar values and belief as a family reduce acculturative stress

  • Acculturative stress is lower among those who are satisfied with their economic opportunity and those who if they have to make the decision again, would move to the US.

  • Stupid math calculation of acculturative stress

Evaluation:

  • Back translation!!! Accuracy sake

  • Complicated calculations and weighting

  • Sensitive personal questions

  • Questions are asked in a way that is negative, hinting and suggesting responses (forced choice option)

  • Other questions are yes or no answers, it is never that simple
