Uses: stereotype, stereotype threat

AimTo investigate the possibility of stereotypes having potential positive and negative effects on behavior.

Procedure:

  • 46 Asian American undergraduates

  • randomly allocated into 1 of 3 conditions

    • Asian identity condition

    • Gender identity condition

    • Control

  • Given math test with 12 questions

  • Before the test they were asked questions related to their condition, for example for Asian identity they asked about their heritage etc.

  • 20 minutes to take the test, marked based on accuracy

Results:

  • Asian identity: 54%

  • Control: 49%

  • Gender identity: 43%

Conclusion:

Under stereotype threat, individuals are more likely to conform to the stereotype.
