Aim: To investigate the possibility of stereotypes having potential positive and negative effects on behavior.
Procedure:
46 Asian American undergraduates
randomly allocated into 1 of 3 conditions
Asian identity condition
Gender identity condition
Control
Given math test with 12 questions
Before the test they were asked questions related to their condition, for example for Asian identity they asked about their heritage etc.
20 minutes to take the test, marked based on accuracy
Results:
Asian identity: 54%
Control: 49%
Gender identity: 43%
Conclusion:
Under stereotype threat, individuals are more likely to conform to the stereotype.
